Seborrheic Dermatitis coal tar shampoo protopic nizoral
Hello Jreyn,
I've had SD since I was 15 or so (I'm now 34), and have had many ups and
downs concerning treatment - using Elocon and Diprolene probably
contributed to my rosacea, and certainly didn't cure the SD! However, in
the last year or so, I've found the right combination of treatments to
keep it on a low boil. Perhaps you can talk to your derm. about these:
-Nizoral cream 2%. This has been the biggest helper for me. I use it at
night after washing with water and pHisoderm or just plain water, and it
helps seal in moisture. I recommend looking into this.
-Coal tar shampoo. I used to use nizoral shampoo on my skin as well, but
got a nasty red burn after doing so. I've also tried using Head and
Shoulders (zinc pyrithione 1%), but don't care for the smell, and it dries
my skin out too much. For the last five years, I've used coal tar shampoo,
which is good at removing the skin crud, and isn't as harsh. It does leave
me sensitive to the sun, but now that I'm using Zinco sunscreen when I'm
outside, it isn't an issue.
-Exercise. Although with my rosacea it leaves me flushed, I've found that
sweating and showering seems to help slough off the SD skin.
-Protopic. I just started using this a month ago, and it worked very well
on two stubborn SD areas, even better than the steroid-based stuff I've
used in the past. Let's see how it works long term...
I hope these ideas help. Also, I just got a newsletterin the mail from
Lynda Sy that talks about SD and Protopic. Check out her web site to get
