Yes, the powder is a physical sunblock. The main ingredient, titanium dioxide, an FDA-approved sunscreen ingredient, is an inert substance which gives "hide" to many products. It is used in oral medications (pills) to give them a white opacity(color). It is also used in makeup foundations and even in paints to give them hide.Physical sunscreens act much like "an umbrella on the face" and they block UVA, UVB as well as visible light. The other ingredients in the powder are also physical sunscreens but they are not FDA approved as sunscreens officially. I do not expect the powder to cause problem because it is such a simple formulation and has no preservative or irritants. Somewhat similar products are the non-chemical type of sunscreens. These products also contain physical sunscreens such as microfine titanium dioxide or microfine zinc oxide in their formulation. However, they may contain preservatives, emulsifiers etc. because of the water content. Water attract bacteria and molds; therefore, formulations containing water require preservatives. Physical sunscreens are particularly useful for individuals who are either allergic or irritated by ordinary sunscreens which contain active chemical sunscreens such as cinnamate, oxybenzone, padimate, avobenzone and the like. Aside from the Concealing Loose Powder which has a neutral beige tone, we carry a Bronzing Loose Powder which gives one a natural-looking tan. This can be applied directly on the face or added to a moisturizer to give it a tint. This is a long message but I hope it helps educate re sunscreens. I hadn't tried the powder before I wrote my last post, and I was surprised to find out it was a sunblock also. So I tried it for the first time yesterday-and I was really impressed with how silky it felt-it didn't feel like any powder I've used before-it was so smooth and cool feeling-almost like it was wet- but of course isn't - and the color and consistency were fine on my face. Will report back after I've used it for about a week. debbie g.
